7 Tips For Preparing Your Home For Winter

Its only the start of Autumn, but the cold weather will be here before you know it. Get a head start and prepared yourself for those cold and rainy days by taking care of a few things inside and outside your home before the cold sets in.

Here are 7 tips to help you prepare for those wintery days...

  •  Change your Bedding: Wash and dry all your summer bedding and store away. Swap your light weight Doona to a heavier one or add wool blankets.  Layer some woolen throws at the end of your bed for extra warmth and comfort.
  •  Wardrobe seasonal change: Just like the seasons change, so should your wardrobe. Be ready for the winter season by bringing out you winter jumpers and long sleeve tops and packing away your summer tops, shorts and beach dresses. Organise your shoes by packing your summer havaianas and sandals and bringing out your wintery boots.

  • Clean Your Gutters: Stay on top of leaves this Autumn and once the last one has fallen to the ground, it’s time to clear out your gutters. Either hire someone, or climb up the ladder yourself, and get rid of all the build up and any blockages.
  •  Pack Away Outdoor Gear: It’s now time to scrub down all your patio furniture and either cover it, or store it away. Similarly, your BBQ might need a good cleaning. Pack away inflatable pools.
    • Window Coverings: Check all windows in your home for holes or cracks and seal them to prevent cold air coming in. Upgrade to heavier curtains or other energy efficient window covering.
    • Heater/Fireplace/Wood Stove Maintenance: If you rely on wood to stay warm, now is a good time to clean out last year’s ashes, and stock up on new wood for the winter. Have the chimney cleaned once a year and get your heating system check as well.
    •  Buy Winter Essentials: Hats and mittens, gumboots, raincoat, umbrellas', basic grocery items, such as coffee.tea, sugar, milk, hot chocolate, so you don't have to make too many trips to the supermarket on cold and rainy days.
